Located by Stockton Lake, Stockton is the seat of Cedar County in Missouri. The first permanent settlements came to our area in the 1830s. When the city became the county seat back in 1846, it was originally named Lancaster. A year later, the town was renamed to Fremont in honor of John C. Frémont, the controversial military leader who strove to bring Missouri into the Union cause during the Civil War.
After Fremont became the Republican candidate for president in 1856, the Democratic Missouri legislature renamed the city after Robert F. Stockton, a U.S. naval commander and senator.
Stockton Lake is naturally the main draw to this area, with great opportunities for boating and fishing on the water as well as camping and horseback riding along the shore.
In fact, Stockton Lake is considered one of the top 10 sailing lakes in the United States. That doesn’t mean that the fishing isn’t great, however. Expect to reel in bass, crappie, walleye, catfish and bluegill from these waters.
However, the town has plenty to offer as well. This city boasts a school district with the highest rating possible in the state, as well as a community museum and an annual celebration, the Black Walnut Festival, which brings together people from miles around for food, music and more.
If you’re ready to experience small-town life on the water, head over to Stockton. We’ve got the new lifestyle you’ve been dreaming about.
